Authentic Christian Gifts is committed to supply customers with beautiful Christian art from around the world.
PEMA Woodcarvings finds its origins in 1793 with the birth of Johann Dominik Mahlknecht in Ortisei (Val Gardena). Johann was taught the native craft of woodcarving at an early age and later brought his skills to other places in Europe. He was eventually appointed by King Karl X of France as "Artist to His Royal Highness." The Mahlknecht family remained respected woodcarvers for generations. In 1969, Peter Mahlknecht established the PEMA Woodcarvings House in Ortisei.
PEMA crafts a wide array of woodcarvings with a variety of finishes. Each piece is carefully carved from aged and kiln dried native timber by skilled artisans. Many pieces are hand painted with incredible detail. Woodcarvings are available in sizes from miniature pieces of only a few centimeters in size (available boxed in beautiful gift cases) to statue size work suitable for Church and Institution use.
At Authentic Christian Gifts, we stock pieces belonging to the famed Kostner Nativity Collection, and also sell pieces from the Rainell Collection, the Alpina Collection, the PEMA Collection, the Mahlknecht Collection and several others.
Various portrayals of our Lord Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the Saints and holy men of old, angels and other figures are all produced with striking beauty. Christmas ornaments and secular carvings are also available.
Our store stocks many sizes, finishes, and styles of PEMA handcrafted crucifixes, and frequently special orders larger pieces for both home and church use.
